HELPS International was honored by hundreds of donors who chose HELPS as a means to alleviate the suffering of the people of Haiti. From all parts of the world, we raised money to send 870 ONIL Water Purification Systems to Haiti. Each ONIL Water Purifier System provides 10 gallons of safe drinking water in 24 hours, which is enough for 20 people for a year. The filter removes 100 percent of parasites and 99.99 percent of pathogenic bacteria. This eight pound filter, weighing slightly more than a gallon of bottled water, will produce 3,650 gallons of water a year. Haiti itself is in total chaos. At the time of this Newsletter, their seaport was said to have collapsed completely and our friends in the Guatemalan Air Force that were to fly the filters into Haiti, have indicated that they were denied entry due to the congestion in main Haitian airport which is strained to capacity. Due to the situation in Haiti we are coordinating with Ceva Logistics to send a Vessel on Wednesday, February 3 to CAUCEDO Port in the Dominican Republic with a container storing 850 water filters that will provide pure water to 17,000 Haitians for over a year. To insure that the filters are delivered appropriately we have partnered with CHF International, a 58 year old US humanitarian relief and development agency that works in Haiti. We will deliver our filters to their warehouse and their staff will make sure that these filters are distributed and delivered to the people that need them the most. CHF International is responding to the earthquake immediately and then will focus on the needs of the people as they transition from basic survival to recovery.
