HELPS International, has teamed up with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network to present the Mayan Artist Demonstration, "Indigenous Vestures and Weavings" on Friday, April 21, 2006 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) Orientation Theater.
As part of the educational programming for the DMA's exhibition, Lords of Creation: The Origins of the Sacred Maya Kingship, the evening will include traditional weaving techniques, a fashion show of Mayan attire, and the Mayan cooking ONIL Stove exposition.
For more than two thousand years, Mayan clothing has served as artistic expression. Guatemalan attire worn by the indigenous people is hand-woven or embroidered in a rainbow of colors with geometric, floral, animal, or human designs. A traditional Guatemalan weaver will demonstrate this timeless art throughout the evening.
In addition to the Mayan artist demonstrations, the DMA's Late Nights series will simultaneously offer Latin dance featuring salsa and merengue lessons, music, films, Coffee tasting, tours of the exhibition, open mike poetry, and other family activities.
General admission is $10 or less, DMA members and children under 12 are free. The Dallas Museum of Art is located at 1717 North Harwood Street in downtown Dallas.
